The Healing a the Pool

Yesterday we had 18 students which made for a great discussion.

The study may be seen here.

Questions for discussion at home

In what ways do we limit God?
Is there anything we need healing from?
Why does the Bible make things seem so easy when in real life they are very hard?

Water into Wine

Today the 29 students in attendance and I talked about Jesus' first miracle in which He turned water into wine. The lesson may be seen here. We had a great discussion about the nature of miracles and how this act ushered in a new phase of Jesus' ministry.

Questions for discussion...

If you had been a the wedding would you have believed a miracle had taken place?
Do miracles still take place today?
What is the difference between a miracle and an amazing coincidence?

Is alcohol a good thing or a bad thing? (we touched on this in the study and I made the point that things are usually not the issue, it is how we treat them..overuse is the real issue)

In The Beginning

We had a great meeting this morning with 24 happy, engaged students.

As we start a new year I wanted to start with the very beginning of the book of Matthew looking at the genealogy. While some people choose to skip over these sections in the Bible, every person listed has a story to tell us. The study this week may be seen here. For those of you who are new to this blog and Bible Study what is posted above is my very rough notes that guide our discussion. Due to time constraints and great discussions I never get to it all.

Discussion questions:
Is our family's genealogy important to us?
Am I related to Jesus? If so, how?
When have I ever witnessed God's plan for my life?

What Does Jesus Have Against Fig Trees?

This morning we had 18 students who seemed happy that spring is finally here. With Spring comes Easter, so today we looked at a few of the events leading up to Easter that are talked about in Matthew 21. Before preparing this lesson I had no knowledge of the deep meaning of figs in the Bible. It was quite eye opening to see how Jesus weaves elements from humanity into His divine story. To see the study notes click here.

Dinner table questions:
What fruit might have been the forbidden fruit for Adam and Eve?
Why did Jesus curse the fig tree?
How are we like the crowd who one day says "Hosanna" and a week later says "Crucify Him?"
If Jesus came into our temple would He be happy or would there be some tables He would overturn?

A Voice in the Wilderness

This morning we had 15 students who were glad to reconnect after a relaxing spring break. We reviewed a bit of our journey so far and then dove into the book of Isaiah. It was a great study in which we saw the foretelling of the coming Son of God in the dark days of the Assyrian and Babylonian domination of God's people. The practical lesson of the need to repent when we mess up was echoed throughout the lesson. The study notes can be seen here.

Questions for the dinner table:

What is the difference between an apology before your misdeed has been discovered and after?
If we know the right thing to do why do we so often do the wrong thing?
